The 27th International Churchill Conference

Churchill in the News is the theme and Churchill in Academia is the setting of this unique 27th International Churchill Conference. The Churchill Centre has partnered with the College of Charleston (CofC) and the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia, SC, for venue and content, emphasizing the importance of Churchill in education.

Churchill in the News will feature never-before-seen newsreel outtakes from the Moving Images Research Collection (USC/MIRC) at USC, which has miles of newsreels from around the world in their archives. The earliest Churchill image is 1923 showing Clementine and Winston Churchill viewing the Trooping of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and continuing through the Normandy Invasion in
1944. Most of the footage is silent, and ‘historic’ as it is unedited and has never been seen before.

Emphasis of the conference will be on Churchill and his contemporaries in the media of mid-20th
Century, how they used the media, and the media code of the day versus today. We are delighted that Churchill’s granddaughter, The Hon. Celia Sandys, and his great-grandson, Randolph Churchill, will be with us throughout the conference. Session speakers include a current journalist, a newsreel historian, authors and academics. Additional speakers will discuss Bernard Baruch and other South Carolinians who were friends or worked with Churchill. Randolph Churchill opens the conference; Lynne Olson and Celia Sandys are dinner speakers.

The sessions, including coffee breaks and lunch, are in the CofC’s Stern Student Center Ballroom, an easy two and one-half block walk from the hotel into the middle of the campus. Both students and professors will be guests of The Churchill Centre. Receptions and dinners are in the hotel.

Registration Gift: Each couple or single registrant will receive a DVD, Churchill in the News, compiled from newsreels in the USC/MIRC archives*, with an introduction by Chris Matthews, subtitled with dates and location, produced in ‘Ken Burns’ style. This limited edition will never be for sale and only available for conference registrants. A few abbreviated 30 minute DVDs will be made for classroom use. Those registering from the UK may request theirs in PAL format.

Thursday, March 24, 2010
Optional Coach Tour of Hobcaw Barony departs at 9:00 am and returns at 3:30 pm.

Registration will be open all day Thursday beginning at 9:00 am on the mezzanine level of the hotel lobby.
First-time conference attendees are invited to a private reception at 5:30 pm, followed by the Welcome
Reception for all registrants at 6:30 pm in the hotel. Dinner on your own.

Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, 2011
Registration will move to the corridor outside the Stern Center Ballroom on the College of Charleston (CoC) campus and open at 8:00 am. All conference sessions will be held in the Stern Ballroom and will begin at 9:00 am each day. Five large screens surround the ballroom on which newsreel outtakes will be shown between sessions.

Randolph Churchill, will greet everyone with an opening welcome message, followed by a Welcome to Charleston. The Bernard Baruch/Churchill relationship will be discussed. The making of newsreels on the battlefront, the code of what could be shown to the public mid-20th Century, and how and why the particular Churchill newsreels were selected by the newsreel companies will be followed by how today’s news is selected. Paul Reid will talk about Defender of the Realm, the third in the Manchester trilogy. Allen Packwood will talk about Making the News: How young Winston Churchill Used the Media to Make his Name. Warren Kimball will discuss how WSC, FDR, and Uncle Joe handled the media. Andrew Roberts will talk about The State of Churchill’s Reputation. The conference will close with a Hardball panel followed by Laurence Geller talking about Churchill’s Influence Today. Vendor and book sales and signing will take place during coffee and lunch.

All receptions and dinners are in the hotel. Friday evening’s reception and awards dinner begin at 6:00 pm. Andrew Roberts, 2009 Centre’s Emery Reves Award will present this year’s award. Lynne Olson is dinner speaker. Saturday evening’s black-tie Chartwell Reception and dinner begin at 6:00 pm. We are especially pleased to have The Honorable Celia Sandys, Churchill’s granddaughter, as our Saturday evening gala speaker.

All images in the conference brochure marked “(USC/MIRC)” are from the Fox Movietone News Collection, courtesy of Moving Image Research Collections at the University of South Carolina. A public film archive of international prominence, Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) at USC strives to preserve their global moving image heritage and diversify understandings of moving image culture. Carolina’s students and faculty members join major American, European, and Asian filmmakers and television producers in using the archive’s diverse collections. MIRC (originally called the Newsfilm Library) began in 1980 with the gift of the Fox Movietone News Collection, which experts have described as the world’s most complete moving image record of American culture in the 1920s. Since the Fox donation, archival holdings have grown to encompass a wide range of materials, including local television news and commercials, home movies, Roman Vishniac’s micro-cinematographic nature films, and a major collection of fiction and documentary films from the People’s Republic of China.
